Very few individuals have the potential to become a speed cuber. Since you’ve learnt to solve the cube, you will soon realise your speed solving potential when you play on it. A speed cuber needs plenty of practice to produce solves below 20 seconds.
The ability to produce fast solves of the cube is even present in very young children. In one case I read about a six year old boy, who could solve the cube in a minute.
I know he’s not produced a 20 second solve, but a 1 minute solve for a six year old is better than 20 seconds for an adult.
If you search the internet you can find information of a seven year old who solved the cube in 49 seconds. There are many other stories of very young and fast cube solvers. Cube solving World records are nearly always produced by people aged 15 – 17 years old.

The previous World champion very recently broke the speed cubing World record at the age of 22. This is unusual.
This is the oldest person I have known to break the Cube speed solving World record. This person is named Felix Zemdegs. Felix Zemdegs is the World’s best ever speed cuber. He has broken numerous speed cubing World records of cubes ranging from 2 x 2 to the 5 x 5 Rubik’s Cubes.
So it’s not that surprising that he set this World record at aged twenty two. Although Felix has so much potential, he still failed to win the last 2 Rubik’s Cube World championships. In the last World championships he finished in fourth place. He was beaten by younger guys.
Felix Zemdegs was the oldest recorded person to have broken the Rubik’s Cube solving World record. You probably won’t see anyone else do this at an age like that for a very long time.
The popularity of solving the Cube has led to the rise of speed cubing competitions. 1982 hosted the first of these competitions.
These competitions host events that range from the 2 x 2 Cube to the 7 x 7 x 7 Rubik’s Cube.
Blindfolded and One handed events are also competed at.

Rubik’s Cube Competition Events
Fewest moves solve is an event in which the competitors try to solve the Cube in the fewest moves. There are events that consist of speed solving other Rubik’s puzzles.
As time as passed more events have been included in speed cubing competitions. Sponsors are needed to raise these competitions.
These competitions raise a huge amount of money. These competitions are attended by people from all over the World.
The participants can be at any age.
The 3 x 3 Cube speed solving is the most popular event at the competition. The 4 x 4 Cube is the next most popular event. The blindfolded event has grown in popularity over the last few years.
The one handed solves are very impressive. Some competitors have even been known to solve a Cube one handed in less than 10 seconds. Some competitors choose to take part in the fewest moves solve. I haven’t known many people who’ve taken part in this particular event.
This event requires a lot of patience and skill. A bit of luck also plays a part in it. I estimate that any winner of this event will solve the Rubik’s Cube in an average of 55 moves.
There are other puzzles that are competitive events. One of the most popular events is the Megamixe puzzle.
This puzzle isn’t as popular as a lot of other events.
Qualifying for finals for any of the events is a very difficult task. There are a lot of World class competitors at these competitions, which makes reaching the finals so tough. To make the final of the 3 x 3 Rubik’s Cube, you need to reach the last 16 competitors.
